Silly Love Songs

My apologies Sir Paul.

I have been accused of maudlin romanticism. Yep, sorry, that’s me. Not sure why. Could be genetic, could be immaturity, could be my naturally melancholic nature, could be I’m just a sap. These traits are generally considered a handicap in our society, but as a writer, they’re a positive boon! Anyway, when I feel blue, I like listening to music, the sappier the better.

On my iPod—no I don’t have an iPhone! Live free or die!—I have a playlist called “Suicide Mix.” The name is an attempt to poke fun of those who accuse me of being a maudlin romantic. There really aren’t too many sad songs on the list, just music that reminds me of days gone by, when life seemed simpler.

Hot Enough for Ya?

We here in the Midwest consider it a God-given right to gripe about the weather. When it’s too cold, we moan, when it’s too wet we grouse, when it’s too hot we kvetch.

It’s gonna be be another day over 100, but just remember, come December, you’ll wish it was July again. Stay cool!

Andy Griffith, R.I.P.

One of the sad things about getting older is watching the things you used to know disappear. I don’t know anyone who didn’t enjoy watching Andy, Barney and Opie and their adventures in Mayberry. It was a funny, uplifting show made by people who genuinely cared for each other. Did you know that Mr. Griffith personally helped develop all the scripts?

Oh, and Andy was a pretty fair dramatic actor too.

No need to recount his many accomplishments, like winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Andy Griffith is one of those rare people that you can’t help but like. And while you may not have agreed with his politics, you have to be glad that he was with us for so long.
